Job Title: Legal Counsel, Supply and Procurement (Contractor)
Reports To: Lead Legal Counsel, Global Procurement
Location: UK Fully Remote
Contract Length: 6 Weeks
Context / Scope:
Sitting within the Global Supply and Procurement (GS&P) legal team, provide legal support for Global Procurement (GP) projects and global functions workstreams, including:
- Legal leadership and advice to the GP team on legal issues and contracts including support for timely negotiation of multi-million pound contracts which typically impact multiple markets or jurisdictions
- Delivery of appropriate and tailored training, know-how and templates at an appropriate frequency and level to both GP and in-market legal teams. Support local in-market lawyers with functional capability development to ensure they have the capability and legal resources to deal with Procurement issues in their markets as efficiently as possible.
- Together with team, legal support on various issues relating to, for example, reputation risks, group litigation or regulatory issues related to GP as required from time.
Leadership Responsibilities:
Nominated legal support for specific project teams, sole accountability for specific procurement stakeholders. - Along with other members of the GS&P legal team, work directly with the in-market legal teams to provide support, develop functional capability and embed Diageo best practice and ways of working in the area of Procurement and other global functions & litigation related legal issues.
Purpose of Role:
- Support and lead effective delivery of GP projects and contracts.
- Resource and focus to build capability of in-market lawyers and GP colleagues to manage risk and reduce requirement for input from senior lawyers.
- Support of productivity agenda especially GP contribution to this.
Top 3-5 Accountabilities:
- Provide solutions and judgement based on a wider Diageo perspective and experience
- Ensure legal and reputational risk is managed effectively by GP function
- Ensure legal and reputational risk is managed effectively on specific global issues
Qualifications and Experience Required:
- Lawyer admitted to practice in England & Wales, Scotland, Ireland or equivalent Commonwealth jurisdiction, with extensive commercial in-house experience gained (minimum of 5 years’ PQE or international equivalent in a commercial legal role);
- Ideally some experience with commercial contracts, specifically procurement

- Commercial pragmatic approach, with ability to express legal concepts in clear and practical manner;
- External lawyer management – understands what work is most effectively staffed internally and externally and the tools to obtain best value in using external lawyers
- Capability development – able to develop practical tools and deliver training effectively and instill the right skills within the Global Procurement and market legal teams
- Skilled in project management, verbal and written communications
- Core understanding of compliance risks, IP, antitrust, data privacy laws and knowing when and how to engage specialist SMEs
- Risk – able to foresee and assess legal, reputational, operational and strategic risks, communicate such risks and enable the company to mitigate effectively such risks
