Electrical Engineering Summer External - Device Design, PLC Programming

Job Description:
Inventing solutions where none exist! As part of the engineering team, the role of the Engineering Summer External is to learn quickly in a hands-on engineering lab setting while helping the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research’s (NIBR) drug hunting scientists in their quest to positively impact the lives of patients. NIBR is undertaking innovative and challenging drug discovery efforts in regenerative medicine and phenotypic screening, and we need your help to enable this amazing science. Our scientists recognize the impact engineering can have on research programs and are eager for your help with science!

Your responsibilities:
We are looking for a passionate external to join our electrical engineering team to help us develop the next generation of liquid handlers.  NIBR engineers will provide training on all subjects.  

Responsibilities may include:   
Programing PLC in a C derived language.
Developing a product in a mixed hardware and software environment with an understanding of how PLC software directly interacts with hardware elements.
Designing tests to ensure a device’s longevity, robustness, and ability to work through an uncontrolled environment.
Creating protocols for liquid handlers, imagers, and robotic systems.
Documenting code, experimental results, and electrical designs in M.S. Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc..).
Learning quickly, adapting, and improving your engineering skills in an industrial research lab setting.
Collaborating with full-time engineers, biologists, chemists, and machinists to contribute to drug discovery efforts.

What you’ll bring to the role:
Junior, senior, or graduate student standing in Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering.
Ability to work full-time during summer session or, to work part-time during school sessions.
Curiosity toward learning how engineering can impact cutting-edge biology.
Eagerness to think though problems on your own and develop solutions in a fast-paced environment.
Excitement for team brainstorming and rapidly prototyping ideas.

Desirable requirements:
Demonstrated engineering interest beyond the classroom, such as participation in extra-curricular design teams, engineering competitions, or research.
Demonstrated leadership and communication experience beyond the classroom, such as holding a leadership role in a service organization, club, sports team, etc. 
Experience working hands on with low level or prototype-style electronics.

Location: San Diego, CA (Onsite)
Pay Rate: $25 - $27/hr (W2 Only - based on Education and Experience)
Contract: 5-month
