Role Purpose:

The Microsoft 365 Messaging & Collaboration SME is responsible for the engineering, delivery, and continual evolution of the organisation’s Microsoft 365 messaging and collaboration platforms. The role provides technical leadership across Microsoft Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Defender for Office 365, and enterprise email security platforms including Proofpoint. Working closely with Architecture, Security, Infrastructure, and Business stakeholders, the SME designs, implements, and optimises secure, resilient, and scalable collaboration services that enable modern ways of working while ensuring compliance, governance, and operational excellence. The role acts as the technical authority for Messaging & Collaboration services, driving platform modernisation, leading complex technical initiatives, providing Tier 3 technical escalation support and leadership, and ensuring Microsoft 365 capabilities continue to evolve in line with business strategy and Microsoft’s technology roadmap.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the engineering, implementation, and continual evolution of Microsoft 365 Messaging & Collaboration services.
  • Design and optimise Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft 365 collaboration solutions.
  • Define technical standards, engineering best practices, and platform roadmaps.
  • Lead messaging migrations, tenant optimisation, and strategic transformation initiatives.
  • Evaluate and adopt new Microsoft technologies to improve collaboration and productivity.
  • Implement and manage Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Exchange Online Protection, and Proofpoint integrations.
  • Design and implement Microsoft Purview capabilities, including Information Protection, DLP, Retention, eDiscovery, and Records Management.
  • Maintain secure mail flow through SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and modern email authentication standards.
  • Ensure messaging platforms remain compliant with organisational security policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with Security and Risk teams to strengthen governance across Microsoft 365.
  • Provide Tier 3 technical leadership and act as the escalation point for complex technical issues.
  • Ensure platform availability, resilience, performance, and operational stability.
  • Develop automation using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, and Microsoft 365 administration tooling.
  • Maintain technical documentation, standards, operational procedures, and support documentation.
  • Support incident, problem, and change management activities.
  • Drive adoption of Microsoft 365 Copilot and emerging collaboration capabilities.
  • Support business transformation initiatives by delivering secure, modern collaboration services.
  • Work closely with Architecture, Identity, Networking, Infrastructure, and Digital Workplace teams.
  • Provide mentoring and technical leadership to engineers within Client Services.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, service improvement, and operational efficiencies

Key Skills/Experience:

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience engineering Microsoft 365 Messaging & Collaboration platforms.
  • Proven experience designing and supporting Exchange Online within enterprise environments.
  • Experience delivering Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 collaboration solutions.
  • Experience implementing Microsoft Purview governance and compliance capabilities.
  • Experience integrating enterprise email security platforms such as Proofpoint or Microsoft Defender for Office 365.
  • Experience leading Microsoft 365 migrations and transformation programmes.
  • Experience working within global or multi-tenant Microsoft 365 environments.
  • Experience providing Tier 3 support and acting as a technical escalation point.
  • Experience working within enterprise or regulated environments.

Desirable

  • Experience delivering Microsoft 365 Copilot readiness and adoption initiatives.
  • Experience supporting Zero Trust programmes.
  • Experience collaborating with Enterprise Architecture and Cyber Security teams.
